Location: Santa’s Ghetto, Carnaby Street, London, 2004
The image of the girl running from the napalm bombing of a Vietnamese village in 1972, by photographer Nick Ut, was taken during the Vietnam War on June 8th, 1972. This iconic photo, taken in Trang Bang shows Phan Thị Kim Phúc at nine years of age running naked on a road after being severely burned on her back by a South Vietnamese attack. The photograph has become one of the most emotive and influential images of the twentieth century. U.S. President Richard Nixon once questioned the authenticity of the photograph, musing as to whether it may have been "fixed." Banksy incorporates this strong image into his design and by adding those two icons of the American Dream, Ronald McDonald and Mickey Mouse, he manages to create on of his most powerful and ironic statements.
